Field studies are similar to, but larger than, onsite investigations. Field studies involve a community of portion of a community that is suspected of having human illness due to biotoxin exposure. Like onsite investigations, field studies may involve the collection of environmental samples for subsequent analyses for toxins, screening using exposure, symptom and previous diagnoses questionnaires and the VCS (and acuity) test, medical examinations and remediation assessment. In addition, field studies may involve assessment of an unexposed control population to more firmly associate the cause and effect relationship, and may require a more extensive period of time to complete. Individuals indicated for possible chronic, biotoxin-induced illness will be referred for additional testing needed to make diagnoses, and will subsequently receive treatment. A written report on the study will be provided immediately after all data are statistically analyzed.
